Big Island police are investigating the shooting of a male inmate from Hawaii Community Correctional Center who allegedly tried to escape from the custody of an Adult Correctional Officer Tuesday afternoon.
Police received a report about the shooting at 2:09 PM. When officers responded to the area near the intersection of Haili Street and Keawe Street in downtown Hilo, they determined that the shooting incident occurred while the inmate was being transported back to the jail. Preliminary investigation determined that the inmate was fleeing from custody at the time of the shooting.
A Fire Department rescue crew transported the injured inmate to the emergency room at Hilo Medical Center for treatment. He was listed in critical condition.
Detectives from the East Hawaii Criminal Investigations Section have classified the case as an escape. The investigation is continuing. The Police Department plans to issue an update as more information becomes known.
As a result of the investigation at the scene, police closed Haili Street between Kamehameha Avenue and Kinoole Street and Keawe Street between Kalakaua Avenue and Mamo Street for approximately three hours.
Police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the escape and shooting to call Detective Richard Sherlock at 961-2379 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
