MEDIA RELEASE

High winds knocked down several trees early Thursday (December 13, 2001) and forced the closure of Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) for about two and a half hours in the vicinity of Puuwaawaa Ranch in Kona.

One of the trees fell across utility lines, causing a power outage in the area.

Kona police received a call about 1:59 a.m. that some trees and utility lines had blocked both lanes of the mauka highway.

Helco and state highway road crews were able to clear the road and allow traffic to flow shortly before 4:30 a.m.
