Hilo police are looking for a man who attempted to sexually assault a female Japanese tourist Wednesday (January 17, 2001).

Investigating detectives learned that about 10 or 11 a.m., the woman caught a ride with a man at the Hilo post office across from Kalakaua Park. The suspect then drove her to the Piihonua area, held her against her will, attempted to fondle her and brandished a knife when she struggled. The woman managed to escape and report the incident to police.

The woman described the suspect as being a Caucasian male, being about 30 to 40 years old, being 5-feet-4 in height with a slim build and having short brown hair and a tan complexion. She said the man spoke with a foreign accent.

The suspect was last seen in a newer model, light green Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with an extra cab and white camper shell.

Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to call Detective Richard Miyamoto of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2255 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property.
