MEDIA RELEASE

Police are asking for the public’s help in determining what happened during a fight that left a 23-year-old man in guarded condition at Straub Medical Center in Honolulu.

Responding to a 12:02 p.m. call Monday (May 29, 2000), police learned that Enoch Akina, of a Pahoa, Puna, address, was flown to Honolulu after a CAT scan revealed that he had swelling and bleeding inside his skull.

A witness said Akina was involved in a fight about 2 or 3 a.m. Saturday in the area of Lihiwai Street and Banyan Drive when he was knocked out for about 30 seconds. His friends then picked him up and drove him home.

Akina’s mother said the victim complained of soreness in his head, so she took him to the Hilo Medical Center, where the CAT scan was conducted.

Anyone who witnessed the fight or has information about it is asked to call Officer Joel Field of the South Hilo Patrol Division at 961-2311 or the police emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
