Hilo police are asking for the public’s help in solving the theft last September of fishing equipment aboard a boat parked ashore at the Wailoa Small Boat Harbor.

Sometime between September 23 and 24, 1999, a thief or thieves cut the lock to the cab of the 27-foot Radon fishing boat and stole about $10,000 in fishing equipment.

Among the items stolen were four 6.5-foot custom trolling fishing poles black, gold and red in color and with an AFCO bent-butt; four Penn International gold reels with the serial numbers E940091, E940291, E940301 and E940311; fishing line; fishing lures; and a cassette tape box with various music tapes.

Anyone with information about the theft or those responsible is asked to call Detective Leo Jitchaku of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2383.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
