MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo police arrested two adults and three juveniles Friday night (June 29, 2001) for liquor law violations, specifically for drinking under the legal age of 21 or supplying alcohol to juveniles.

A crime reduction unit comprised of Juvenile Aid Section and South Hilo Patrol Division officers conducted the operation, which is aimed at curtailing underage drinking.

Among those arrested was a 22-year-old Hilo man who allegedly supplied alcohol to one 11-year-old and two 14-year-old female juveniles in a public park on Banyan Drive.

Police will continue the crackdown on underage drinking throughout the Fourth of July holiday and the rest of the year in an attempt to nab underage drinkers before they get behind the wheel of a car, Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said.

So far this year, Big Island police have made 136 arrests for underage drinking, Apele said.
