A 55-year-old male tourist from France was flown to the Straub Burn Center on Oahu early Monday (March 10, 2003) with burns he suffered after falling onto cooling molten lava.

The victim, identified as Guy Bouneau of St. Gely DuFesse, France, was in an undetermined area of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park when he fell onto the lava and sustained first-, second- and third-degree burns to his hands, right forearm and right outer thigh.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center by an acquaintance in his tour group who also served as an interpreter and later flown to Straub, where he was reported in serious condition.
