MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island residents are receiving cards asking them for a $10 check to find out if the state owes them unclaimed money.

The problem is, police said, residents can find out if they are owed unclaimed money by calling the Unclaimed Property Branch of the State Department of Budget and Finance at (808) 586-1589.

The information is free, and once a year, the state government publishes in newspapers throughout the state a list of individuals and businesses eligible to received unclaimed money.

The card being sent to residents is from a group called “Asset Recovery,” which has a Las Vegas, Nevada, address.

The cards are addressed to residents by name and contain a reference number. The card states that Hawaii law requires that unclaimed money must be returned to the rightful owner upon presentation of proper documentation.

The recipient is asked to fill out a form on the back of the card and send it, plus a $10 check, to the Las Vegas address.
