MEDIA RELEASE

A 74-year-old Hilo man died Saturday (September 2, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash on Route 240 near the 5-mile marker in Hamakua.

The victim has been identified as Frank W. Farias of Hilo.

Responding to an 11:22 a.m. call, Hamakua patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling west on Route 240 when he lost control of the motorcycle in an attempt to avoid a group of motorcycles in front of him.

Fire rescue personnel took him to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died at 12:36 p.m.

It appears that speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash and that the victim was not wearing a helmet.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Officer Wendall Carter of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-2293.

This is the 26th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 23 at this time last year.
