MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged a father and son Thursday (May 13, 1999) with a variety of offenses for an alleged kidnapping of two men that occurred Sunday.

At 3:12 p.m., detectives charged Josiah Kia Sr., 44, of Kailua-Kona, with two counts of first-degree kidnapping, two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, one count of first-degree robbery, one count first-degree extortion.

His son, Josiah Kia Jr., 23, also Kailua-Kona, was charged with two counts of accomplice to kidnapping.

Kia Sr. is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $13,500 bail; Kia Jr., in lieu of $4,000 bail.

Hamakua police had responded to a 5:45 p.m. report Sunday of a kidnapping in Kalopa, Hamakua.

Responding officers learned that two males, 41 and 48, were forced into a van by six males, threatened at gunpoint, beaten and robbed. The incident apparently stemmed from a disagreement at an earlier cockfight.

Police are looking for other individuals involved in the incident. Anyone with information about the incident or the identities of those involved are asked to call Hilo CIS Detective Randal Ishii at 961-2385 or Detective Glenn Uehana at 961-2386.
