MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo detectives are investigating a fatal shooting in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna on Tuesday (June 19).

Puna patrol officers were flagged down at a home on Paradise Drive, where the 28-year-old male victim was found with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel transported the victim to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m.

Hilo detectives have identified a possible suspect, who was involved in a fatal one-car traffic accident in North Kohala later in the day.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the possible suspect was driving north on Akoni Pule Highway .1 mile north of the 7-mile marker in a 2007 Dodge pickup truck when he crossed the centerline, struck an embankment and overturned.

The driver and sole occupant, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the truck. Fire rescue personnel took him to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died at 2:48 p.m.

The crash was the 17th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 17 at the same time last year.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing.

Names of the victim and suspect are being withheld pending notification of their relatives.

Police ask anyone with any further information about the case to call Detective Darren Horio of the Area I Criminal Investigations Section at 961-2385 or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.
