The Waimea Ponekos and Kealakehe took the division championships in the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League’s recent Girls Intermediate Basketball Tournament.
Eighteen teams representing 12 intermediate schools from around the Big Island fought it out in the A and B Divisions.
The Waimea Ponekos slipped by Keaau 27-23 to win the A Division championship. The Ponekos were led by Liko DeSilva and India Soo, who scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Imani Young led Keaau with 12 points.
Konawaena fell to Keaau 47-38 for third place.
Members of the Ponekos were DeSilva, Soo, Saundra Cariaga, Tehani Ah Loy, Jessica Alcordo, Kauwila Lavea and Bobbie Lee Kawamoto. The team was coached by Craig Kimura.
In the B Division, Kealakehe overwhelmed the Waiakea titans 43-24 to clench the title. Haunani Liftee and Arianne Arao led Kealakehe with 14 and 11 points respectively.
The Hilo Intermediate Spartans took third place after falling to the Waiakea Titans 17-16.
Members of the Kealakehe team were Liftee, Arao, Noe Kaanoi, Natasha Hee, Nalani Hee, Brittney Alapai, Tasha Duarte and Misha Kahina. They were coached by Lynelle Kamakau.
