Hawaii County police have identified a body found in Hilo on Sunday ( April 20) as 76-year-old Philip L. Monette of Pahoa.

Beachgoers reported finding the body floating in the water at Reed’s Bay early Sunday afternoon. They moved the body to shore and called 911.

Fire Department personnel determined that the individual was deceased. Responding patrol officers called detectives from the Criminal Investigations Section to investigate. Police have not ruled out foul play. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday (April 22) to determine the cause of death.

Police initially withheld Monette’s name pending positive identification.
