Hilo police are seeking the public’s help in solving a burglary that occurred last June.

Between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 1998, burglars broke into a Haihai Street residence and stole numerous items.

Among the items taken were a 400-pound safe, a large Japanese drum used for Bon dances, six smaller Japanese drums for Bon dances, Chinese artifacts, two handguns and a 1986 beige Toyota pickup truck.

Investigators said the handguns and Chinese artifacts were inside the safe. The items were loaded into the truck and driven off.

The total value of the stolen items, including the truck, was estimated at $25,000.

Police later recovered the truck and drums.

Anyone with information about the burglary or those involved is asked to call Officer Elson Cabatu at 961-2283.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
