TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT UNIT
SERGEANT CHRISTOPHER D. GALI
NOVEMBER 25, 2006
REPORT NO. C06036828
A 22-year-old Hilo woman who was a passenger in a vehicle died Saturday (November 25, 2006) from injuries she sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Kalanianaole Street, 327 feet east of Akepa Street.
The victim was identified as Tim Yasuho Inaba Young of Hilo.
Responding to a 4:19 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that a 1990 Ford 2-door sedan being driven by a 26-year-old Hilo man was traveling west on Kalanianaole Street when the driver lost control, ran off the right side of the road and struck a mailbox and palm trees.
The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger was also not wearing a seatbelt but was confined within the vehicle.
Fire rescue personnel took both of them to Hilo Medical Center, where Young died at 7:44 a.m.
The driver was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, negligent homicide and driving without no-fault insurance. He was released pending further investigation because he was in serious condition and required surgery.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers believe that speed and alcohol contributed to the crash. They ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
This is the 31st traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 32 at this time last year.
