DECEMBER 19, 2005
A 25-year-old Hakalau man died Monday (December 19, 2005) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on December 16, 2005.
The victim was identified as Keenan J. McCully of Hakalau.
Responding to a 1:54 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2005 Chevrolet Pick-up truck and traveling west on East Kawili Street fronting the Hawaii Community College when he lost control, crossed the centerline and struck a sign and utility pole.
The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire Rescue personnel and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. The victim died at 11:55 p.m. today.
Two passengers in the vehicle, a 26-year-old male and 25-year-old female both from Hilo were treated and released with minor injuries.
Speed appears to be a factor in this crash but it is unknown if alcohol were involved.
Traffic enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered a autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
This is the 35th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 39 at the same time last year.
