MEDIA RELEASE CORRECTION
A 76-year-old Hilo woman died Wednesday morning (August 18, 1999) after she was struck by a car while she was trying to cross Kaumana Drive just above Omao Street in Hilo.
The victim was identified as Hsiu Chen of a Kaumana Drive address.
Responding to a 7:42 a.m. call, police officers determined that the victim was trying to cross Kaumana heading in the Hamakua direction when she was struck by a 1997 Nissan sedan heading makai.
The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where she later died as a result of injuries she sustained in the accident. She was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m.
Neither the driver of the Nissan, Jeana Fujioka of Kurtistown, Puna, nor her two passengers were injured.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation to determine if speed was a factor in the accident. They have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Wednesday’s fatality was the 18th of the year so far on the Big Island, compared to 25 at the same time last year.
