A Hilo home was extensively damaged by fire Sunday (July 2, 2000) after a bucket of wet charcoal next to the house ignited itself.
Responding to a 10:39 a.m. call, police and fire units arrived to find about half of the house, located at 33 Noeau Street, engulfed in flames.
Firefighters extinguished the fire about a half-hour later.
There was no one at home at the time of the blaze, and there were no injuries reported.
Damages were estimated at $139,060 to the structure and $350,000 to its contents.
Fire investigators said the blaze was caused when a bucket of wet charcoal at the southeast corner of the house dried out and ignited itself.
The owners of the house were listed as Rodney and Pearl Haili.
