MEDIA RELEASE

Police arresting a 45-year-old suspect wanted for drug offenses have charged him with a number of additional drug offenses after finding several illegal drugs in his possession.

Erwynne Kalima Sr., of no permanent address, was arrested at an Ainalako Road address about 1:30 p.m. Monday (December 23, 2002) after a Hilo police officer recognized him as being wanted for drug offenses resulting from a previous arrest made on December 6, 2002.

When arrested Monday, Kalima had two bags slung over his shoulder and a pouch in his pocket. Because of his past drug offenses and because he attempted to discard the bags, police called for a narcotics dog to screen the bags for illegal drugs.

After the dog alerted police to the presence of illegal drugs, officers recovered 18.3 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice”; 2.5 grams of cocaine; 2.4 grams of “crack” cocaine; 27 oxycodone tablets; and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia.

As a result of Monday’s arrest and the previous one, Kalima was charged with 11 counts of promoting a dangerous drug, two counts of promoting a detrimental drug, one count of promoting a harmful drug and two counts of illegal possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is currently being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $95,000 bail.

In the earlier arrest, Kalima had been released pending further investigation after police making a traffic stop found crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, marijuana and oxycodone tablets in his possession.
