Hawaiʻi County police have arrested and charged a Puna man with attempted murder in connection with an altercation in Hilo early Saturday morning (October 18).

At 2 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 400 block of West Kawili Street and found a 21-year-old Hilo man with a neck injury. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

Investigation revealed that the victim had attempted to break up a fight between a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy when the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Atkinson Nakashima of Pāhoa, struck the victim in the neck with a machete.
