MEDIA RELEASE

A 55-year-old Hilo man died Tuesday (December 6, 2005) from injuries he sustained in a one‑vehicle crash on the Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19), .1 mile east of the 29 Milepost.

The victim was identified as Alfredo Raquedan, Jr. of a Hilo address.

Responding to a 4:30 a.m. call, North Hilo police determined that a 2003 Toyota pick-up truck was traveling west on the Hawaii Belt Road, when the vehicle hydroplaned, crossed the centerline and struck the embankment on the mauka side of the highway.

The victim and two other males, 17 and 18, from Hilo, were riding in the bed of the truck and were ejected.

The victim and front seat passenger, a 53 year-old Hilo man were transported to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire Department personnel. The victim was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m. and the front seat passenger was treated and released with minor injuries.

The 17 and 18 year-old males were transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital. The 17-year-old was treated and released with minor injuries and the 18-year-old was admitted in serious condition.

The driver of the truck, a 34-year-old Hilo man was not injured.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors and if seatbelts were used.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard Negligent Homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 32nd traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 39 at the same time last year.
