A 46-year-old Hilo man was killed Tuesday (July 30, 2002) after his motorcycle collided with an automobile at the intersection of Waianuenue Avenue and Ululani Street in Hilo.

Responding to a 12:31 p.m. call, Hilo police determined that the victim, identified as Tompkins N. Williams Sr., was riding west up Waianuenue Avenue when his 1998 Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with a 1994 Mercury four-door sedan driven by John Iswan, 64, heading in the opposite direction and making a left turn from Waianuenue onto Ululani Street.

Williams was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, were he was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m.

Iswan was also taken to the Hilo hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Williams’ death was the 16th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 18 at the same time last year.
