Hawaiʻi Police detectives are investigating the death of a 44-year-old man following an altercation early Saturday morning fronting a sports bar on Makaʻala Street in Hilo.

Police have identified the victim as Roy Williams Jr. of a Mountain View address.

Monday (December 5) at 10:07 a.m., detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section arrested 21-year-old Waylen Carenio of Hilo on suspicion of second-degree murder after he turned himself in to police.

On Saturday (December 3), during routine patrol on Makaʻala Street, South Hilo patrol officers were flagged down by citizens just after 3 a.m. They discovered the unconscious victim lying on the roadway. Witnesses said the victim had been in an altercation with another man, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head on the pavement.

Williams was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening.

Carenio is being held at the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident on Makaʻala Street call Detective Reed Mahuna at 961-2384 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
