Media Release

A 54-year-old Hilo man was critically injured in a motor vehicle/pedestrian collision on Kamehameha Avenue just south of Kumu Street.

Responding to a 7:28 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that the victim was crossing Kamehameha Avenue in a westerly direction when he was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet 4-door sedan being operated by a 32-year-old Hilo woman who was traveling south on Kamehameha Avenue in the outer lane.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire Rescue personnel and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Police do not believe that speed or alcohol was involved on the part of the driver but that the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol.

Police are asking that if there were any witnesses to this crash to call Officer Matthew Kaaihue at 935-3311 or Officer Robert Pauole of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-8119.
