MEDIA RELEASE

A 55-year-old Puna man died early Sunday morning (June 11, 2000) after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on Volcano Highway (Route 11) near Mamaki Street in Hilo.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Responding to a 10:58 p.m. call Saturday, police officers determined that the victim was walking along the mauka shoulder of the road when he was struck by a 1996 Dodge flatbed truck driven by a Han Bang, 49, of Pahoa, Puna. The victim was knocked onto the roadway and run over by other passing vehicles.

The victim was later transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:19 a.m. The driver of the flatbed and his female passenger Theresa Bang, 50, were not injured in the crash. The accident caused a closure of Route 11 for about two hours while Puna-bound traffic was rerouted to allow officers to investigate the scene.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing the investigation, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

This was the 12th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to nine at the same time last year.
