Media Release

Hawaii County Police are investigating a robbery reported Friday afternoon (February 8) in Hilo.

At about 5:35 p.m., South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of a man being assaulted by another man in front of a home in the upper Waiakea Uka area. Upon arrival, police located a 24-year old Hilo man with apparent injuries suffered during the confrontation with the suspect, who was no longer in the area.

Fire/rescue personnel took the victim to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, which were not life threatening. His condition was listed as fair.

Police learned that the suspect forcibly pulled the victim from his vehicle and continued to assault him once he was outside. The victim reported that the suspect removed an undisclosed amount of cash from him and then fled the area in what is described as an early model white Toyota pickup truck with dark tinted windows.

The suspect is described as a clean-shaven local male in his mid 20s, approximately 5-foot-10, about 175 pounds with a fair complexion and short black hair. He was last seen wearing a T-shirt, shorts and shoes.

Police have initiated unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and robbery investigations, both felonies, and an assault investigation.

Police ask anyone with information about the suspect or anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call police at 961-2211. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers calls are kept confidential.
