Media Release

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man suspected of robbing a Hilo jewelry story Friday (November 2).

Responding to a 10 a.m. call, South Hilo Patrol Officers found the owner of the Kamehameha Avenue store injured after having been choked by a man. The officers also discovered that the man took the victim’s wedding ring, cell phone, camera and identification from her wallet.

The victim briefly lost consciousness during the attack and was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was treated and released. She described her attacker as a local male in his late 20s to early 30s, 6-feet tall, with a medium complexion, black hair and a heavy build. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and long shorts that extended below the knee with a white border on the hem and had tattoos circling both calves from the knees to the ankles.

The suspect approached the store from Waianuenue Avenue and was captured on videotape by a surveillance camera from a neighboring business.

As a result of police investigation, the suspect has been identified as Nahele Stau, 31, of Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Police ask anyone with information on his whereabouts not to approach him but to immediately call the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
