Jeremyal Leedy
…charged with second-degree robbery

Media Release (update No. 2)

Big Island Police have identified the lone male suspect who robbed Macy’s department store at Prince Kuhio Plaza on Wednesday (September 19).

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Section charged 23-year-old Jeremyal B. Leedy of Oahu with second-degree robbery Thursday afternoon.

Store personnel reported to police that a man was looking at a watch in the jewelry department of Macy’s on Wednesday when the employee who was helping him asked for the watch back. He declined and said he was taking it. He also made a reference to shooting the employee but didn’t produce a weapon. A witness saw a bulge under the man’s clothing. No one received any physical injuries during the incident.

Several people who saw news coverage showing still surveillance images of the suspect and the vehicle in which he fled recognized Leedy and called Crime Stoppers.

Believing that the suspect might attempt to flee the island, detectives alerted security at Hilo International Airport, furnishing them with a photograph of Leedy. At about 10 a.m. Thursday, Leedy tried to board a flight to Oahu. Security personnel recognized him and took him into custody.

Leedy is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $50,000 bail pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Friday afternoon in Hilo District Court.
