In a continued effort to rid the Downtown Hilo area of street level drug dealers, Vice Section officers arrested six people Thursday (December 14, 2000) in a raid on an apartment complex, following a two-month long investigation.

At 11:00 a.m., officers served six search warrants at 76 Kilauea Avenue and arrested three men and three women after recovering more than four grams of crystal methamphetamine or “ice”, “crack” cocaine, ammunition, a butterfly knife, drug paraphernalia and more than $1,100 in cash.

John Kapahu, M-40, of Hilo, was arrested and charged for promoting a dangerous drug, possessing drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest, following an intense struggle with officers. His bail has been set at $10,500 and he is being held in police custody.

The five other adults were arrested for various offenses, including promoting dangerous drugs, possessing drug paraphernalia, ownership prohibited, and butterfly knife prohibited. They all remain in police custody pending further investigation.
