MEDIA RELEASE

Police are looking for a male teenager who grabbed a purse from a 72-year-old Hilo woman who was injured in a robbery Friday night (October 13, 2000).

Responding to a 7:02 p.m. call, police learned that the victim was in the Prince Kuhio Plaza parking lot fronting Liberty House when the teenager grabbed her purse. The woman hung onto the purse as the suspect tried to flee and was dragged along the ground until the strap broke. The suspect then fled with the purse down Pilipaa Street. He was last seen running in the brush at Ohuohu and Kahaopea Streets. A police search of the area failed to turn up any sign of the suspect.

Although the victim suffered scrapes and bruises, she declined medical attention.

The suspect was described as being in his middle to late teens, being about 5-feet-4 in height, weighing 120 to 130 pounds with a thin build, having a dark complexion, being clean shaven and having short black hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt with a possible white design on the front, long black shorts and light-colored sneakers.
