Hilo youth dies while diving in Kona 08-11-02

A 19-year-old male died Sunday afternoon (August 11, 2002) after he was free-diving with friends at the shoreline just north of Maunuka Bay, Kona.

The victim was identified as Dayton Kalani Goodman, of a Hilo address.

Responding to a 12:25 p.m. call, Ka’u police along with Fire Department units arrived via helicopter and determined that the victim was free-diving with four other males when the others lost sight of him. They found the victim on the ocean floor in approximately 40 feet of water. Upon arrival of the fire units, the victim was extracted from the water and transported out of the area via helicopter.

The victim was transported to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:17 p.m.

The investigation has been classified as a coroner’s inquest, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
