Kona police arrested a 22-year-old man after he turned himself in Sunday (September 19, 2004) in connection with a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a female pedestrian the night before.
Police said Joshua H. Shimaoka, of Kailua-Kona, turned himself in at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. Police took a statement from the suspect and released him pending further investigation.
They also recovered what appears to be the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run, a 1996 blue Honda four-door sedan.
About 7:20 p.m. Saturday, Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a traffic accident on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the 95-mile marker just south of the Natural Energy Lab of Hawaii, also known as OTEC. Officers arrived as fire rescue personnel were treating an injured 34-year-old Kailua-Kona woman who had been struck by a car.
Witness said the woman was walking with another female along the shoulder of the road when she was struck by a car heading south toward Kailua-Kona. Witnesses said the car had been recklessly overtaking other cars at a high rate of speed and using the shoulder of the road to overtake other vehicles.
Witnesses described the vehicle as a blue or green compact, possibly a Toyota or Honda.
The injured woman was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was reported Saturday evening in guarded condition suffering from lacerations and several broken bones.
