HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
TRAFFIC SERVICES SECTION
ACTING LIEUTENANT RANDY APELE
PHONE: 961-2305
DECEMBER 19, 2000

MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island Police are advising motorists of a change in traffic regulations on Ponahawai Street. Effective December 26, 2000, motorists traveling in both the makai and mauka directions will be prohibited from making left turns from Ponahawai Street onto Kapiolani Street between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays. This traffic regulation will not be in effect on weekends and holidays for a period of ninety (90) days.

Acting Lieutenant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said this change is being implemented following a review conducted by Police and Public Works personnel and is intended to reduce the traffic buildup on Ponahawai Street during peak traffic hours caused by left turns.

Apele urged motorists to exercise patience and drive with extra caution, for traffic in the Hilo area will be heavier and slower than normal until Komohana Street is reopened.
