MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police said two men who invaded a Honaunau home in South Kona on Wednesday (September 10, 2003) were dressed like police officers, showed badges and identified themselves as police officers.

Between 8 and 8:15 a.m., the two men armed with two handguns and a shotgun forced their way into the home, overpowered the 49-year-old male occupant, forced him to the ground and tied him up with duct tape. They then searched the home, stole an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables and escaped on foot.

Besides being dressed as police officers, the robbers were described as an older Filipino male and a younger local male.

West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives advised residents to make sure that police officers identify themselves by their badge with a badge number and police identification with their photo on it.

They also ask that information about the home invasion or the identities of the robbers to call Detective William Gary Souther of the West Hawaii CIS at 326-4231 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
