Big Island police are reminding residents that on January 1, 2001, the new state law regarding driver’s licenses for minors will go into effect.
Act 175 passed during this year’s session of the Legislature increases the age limit for obtaining an instructional permit to 15 years and six months.
To obtain a driver’s license, minors must be at least 16 years old. In addition, they must present a driver education student completion certificate and a behind-the-wheel student completion certificate for the class of driver’s license they are applying for.
To accommodate younger drivers this year, the Police Department will extend the hours of road tests to Saturdays. To be eligible, individuals must be 15-17 years old, have an instructional permit and have completed their 90-day waiting period.
The Saturday road tests are being offered from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. by appointment only at the Hilo, Kona and Waimea stations starting Saturday, November 25, and ending Saturday December 30, 2000.
Road tests can be scheduled by calling 961-2222 in Hilo, 327-3580 in Kona and 887-3087 in Waimea.
