MEDIA RELEASE

A three-bedroom house in Hilo was damaged by fire Wednesday night (January 26, 2000) as its four occupants escaped without injury.

Responding to a 6:49 p.m. call, police and fire units arrived at 845-B Uilani Place to find the single-story wooden structure on fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze before it could spread from the living room.

The renter, Cheryl L. Malendres, 24, told police that her three children were watching television in the living room when the TV set apparently caught fire. The woman got her children to safety and then called the emergency number.

There was no immediate estimate of damage, although the living room and exterior of the house were burned and damaged by smoke. Fire officials are continuing an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

The home is owned by Patrick Tani of Hilo.
