Media Release

The Hawai’i State Law Enforcement Officials Association has named Detective Sherry Bird as the Hawai’i Police Department’s Officer of the Year for 2009.

Bird, an 11-year veteran of the Police Department, is assigned to the Ice Task Force in Kona.

Since she joined the unit in September 2008, Bird and the Ice Task Force either were directly involved with or assisted in the recovery of approximately 3 pounds of "ice," 5.7 ounces of cocaine, 1,205 marijuana plants, 7.5 pounds of dried marijuana and 14 grams of heroin. The unit investigated 205 cases and arrested 74 persons for 151 offenses. In addition, police seized numerous vehicles, several firearms and thousands of dollars in cash in connection with the drug offenses.

"Detective Bird is focused, organized and goal oriented," said her supervisor, Lieutenant Miles Chong. "She demonstrates sound judgment, regularly directs and influences her subordinates toward their goals and objectives, and requires very minimum supervision."

The HSLEOA award was presented September 25 on Maui at a banquet at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.
