Report No. C08020684
A 41-year-old Kailua-Kona man died Sunday (July 6) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11), .3 miles north of the 49-mile marker, north of Pahala in the Ka’u District.
Responding to a 3:22 p.m. call, Ka’u patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 1999 Kawasaki motorcycle and traveling south on the highway when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed the centerline and ran off the left side of the road.
The victim was dead at the scene and later transported to Kona Community Hospital where he was officially pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m.
The victim was not wearing a helmet.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in the crash.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.
This is the 14th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 17 at this time last year.
