MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police traffic investigators have identified a 53-year-old Hawaiian Ocean View Estates man who died Sunday (March 26, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle traffic collision that occurred on March 25, 2006 in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

The victim was identified as Gary L. Avery of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Responding to a 9:30 p.m. call, (March 25, 2006) Ka’u Patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 1979 Toyota pick-up truck and traveling south on Princess Kaiulani Boulevard, .1 mile south of Hawaii Boulevard, when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

The driver was transported to the Kona Community Hospital and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu where he died Sunday morning.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Being that this fatality occurred on a private road, it is not counted towards the islands fatality count.
