Media Release (update)

Big Island police have identified a man who died Sunday (July 6) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) as Peter Paul Quesada III of Kailua-Kona.

Responding to a 3:22 p.m. call, Ka’u patrol officers determined that Quesada was operating a 1999 Kawasaki motorcycle and traveling south on the highway when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed the centerline and ran off the left side of the road. He was not wearing a helmet.

He was dead at the scene and later transported to Kona Community Hospital where he was officially pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in the crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.

This is the 14th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 17 at this time last year.
