HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT

LIEUTENANT ERNEST E. CORREIA

JULY 29, 1999

MEDIA RELEASE

Police are reminding motorists that Keaau High School will open Monday (August 2, 1999) and advising them to drive with extra caution in the area surrounding the school.

Police are expecting heavy traffic in the morning as parents are dropping off their children at the school.

They are advising motorists who are not dropping off students to avoid the area, if at all possible, from 7 to 8 a.m., at least until the Keaau Bypass Road is open to traffic. The bypass road, now being completed, is scheduled to open the week following the opening of the school.

Students may be dropped off at the new high school by way of one route only, by entering the school grounds through the front, makai entrance, marked by a sign saying “Keaau High School.” Traffic is forbidden to enter the school via any other access route.

Once inside the school grounds, traffic may leave only via the mauka exit.

Also, traffic will flow in a counter-clockwise direction around the school. Stopping or parking along the finished portion of the Keaau Bypass Road, even temporarily, is prohibited.

Uniformed police officers will be on hand to ensure a smooth traffic flow, said Lieutenant Ernest E. Correia, head of the Traffic Services Section.

The officers will be enforcing the speed limit and other related traffic regulations and will be writing traffic tickets to all violators.
