BICYCLING SAFETY — About 35 kids from ages 7 to 11 who live in Keaukaha went on a seven-mile bike ride with community policing officers after taking a class in bicycle safety. Keaukaha keikis got to practice their new bicycling skills immediately after taking a class in bicycle safety taught Wednesday (March 21, 2001) by Hilo community policing officers.
About 35 kids, residents of the Keaukaha community and ranging in age from 7 to 11, were led by four community policing officers on a trip of more than three and a half miles from the Kawanakakoa Hall to Richardson Beach Park.
On their way back to the community center, they stopped at the new Lokoaka Ponds parking area, where they met with members of the Leleiwi Community Association and then picked up trash from Kalanianaole Avenue to the Beach area.
After cleaning up, the kids rode back to Puhi Bay for lunch. For the younger children, the round-trip bicycle ride of more than seven miles was a long one.
Community policing officers taking part in the clean-up and biking expedition were Richard Sherlock, the officer assigned to the Keaukaha area, Van Reyes, John Pagay, John Rodrigues and Elson Cabatu.
The project was a cooperative effort involving the Hawaii County Police Department, County Parks and Recreation Department, Kawananakoa Hall and the Leleiwi Community Association.
