Media Release

Big Island police have arrested and charged a 53-year-old Hilo man for intentionally scratching a vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping complex in Hilo on Friday afternoon (March 11).

Corey H. Yamanouchi was arrested Friday and charged Saturday morning (March 12) with third-degree criminal property damage. He was released after posting $500 bail.

The arrest stemmed from an incident in which an off-duty police officer observed Yamanouchi scratch or “key” the hood of a parked sports-utility vehicle while in the parking lot of Prince Kuhio Plaza, causing damages in excess of $1,000. The suspect was not known by the victim.

Police continue to investigative several reports of similarly damaged vehicles that were parked in the plaza, in Downtown Hilo and in other areas. It is a problem that has sporadically plagued Hilo for several years. Police encourage anyone with information about any of these cases to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
