MEDIA RELEASE

A 34-year-old Kona man was shot in the ribs with a spear on Saturday night (June 9, 2001) after a “road rage” incident in North Kona.

A 17-year-old female was arrested for Attempted Murder for allegedly shooting the victim with the speargun after threatening to kill him. The female’s 26-year-old boyfriend was also arrested for Attempted Murder for allegedly trying to run the injured victim over with a vehicle.

Responding to a 9:15 p.m. call of a fight on Mahilani Drive, Officers learned that the victim was driving North on Route 190, when the suspect’s began tailgating him. The victim reported that he pulled over on Mahilani Drive and was confronted by the suspects. During the confrontation the juvenile female allegedly told the victim that she was going to kill him and then she allegedly fired a spear into the victim’s left side. The metal spear failed to penetrate the victim’s body, possibly striking a rib. According to the victim, the suspects then drove off at a high rate of speed, but returned several seconds later. The 26-year-old male driver then allegedly tried to run over the victim before leaving the scene.

The victim sustained a minor puncture wound to his skin and he refused medical treatment.

During check of the area, Kona Officers located the suspect’s vehicle and arrested both suspects. The Kona Criminal Investigation Section is continuing the investigation.
