Media Release

On Friday (July 1) at approximately 6:10 p.m., Kona Patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting in the parking lot of a local business on Kuakini Highway.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim, a 54-year-old Kailua-Kona man, had met with a 25-year-old male acquaintance, also from Kailua-Kona, in the parking lot of a local business when the suspect grabbed the victim’s wallet. The suspect was unable to retrieve the wallet and fled on foot with the victim giving chase.

During the foot chase, the suspect turned and fired a dark-colored pistol at the victim, striking him in the shoulder area. The suspect then fled in a light-colored unknown type sport-utility vehicle.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Detectives with the Area II Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation.
