MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are investigating an attempted robbery in Kailua-Kona on Saturday (December 30).

At 11:59 a.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old man reported that he and his 16-year-old brother were walking south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway just north of Nani Kailua Drive when they were approached by a vehicle with three male occupants.

According to the victim, a male exited the vehicle from the rear passenger side with a baseball bat and demanded that the victim give him a PlayStation 3 that he was carrying. The victim backed up a little and the male suspect struck him in the left arm. The victim’s younger brother was able to take the bat away from the suspect, who then returned to the vehicle and left the scene traveling south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

The victim described the suspect as being local looking, 17-to-18 years old, about 6-feet tall with a tax complexion and short black hair. He was wearing shorts and a red shirt.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a brown sport-utility vehicle, license plate HCP 042.

The victim complained of pain to his left arm and was treated at the scene by paramedics but refused further treatment. Detectives from the Kona Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation.

Police ask anyone with information about the case to call the Kona Criminal Investigations Section at 326-4646, extension 268, or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.
