MEDIA RELEASE

Police have arrested and charged a Kona couple for counterfeiting U.S. currency and for drug offenses.

Responding to a 6:23 p.m. call Friday (September 26, 2003) from the manager of a Kailua-Kona restaurant, Kona patrol officers determined that a female customer passed a $100 counterfeit bill to purchase food and then attempted to get change with a second counterfeit $100 bill.

After determining the bills were counterfeit, the officers arrested the suspect, identified as Courtney Marie Texeira, 28, for theft and forgery.

During her arrest, they also arrested her boyfriend, David Burrough Jr., 32, for hindering prosecution.

Taking over the investigation, West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives recovered a home computer, a scanner, a printer and paper – as well as numerous counterfeit $5 and $100 bills, crystal methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia – from the couple’s home.

Detectives charged Texeira with fourth-degree theft, forgery, trademark counterfeiting and attempted theft. They also found that Texeira was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant for contempt of court. Her bail was set a $2,400.

Burrough was charged with hindering prosecution, trademark counterfeiting, promoting a dangerous drug and possessing illegal drug paraphernalia. He was also wanted on two outstanding warrants for contempt of court, and his bail was set at $3,650.

Both suspects are being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of bail or arraignment in district court.
