MEDIA RELEASE

Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged a 25-year-old woman with first-degree custodial interference Thursday (March 18, 1999) after she kept a young boy overnight without the parents’ permission.

The suspect, identified as Leina Lewis, of Kailua-Kona, is being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $1,000 bail. Custodial interference is a Class C felony.

An investigation determined that at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect went over to her neighbor’s yard where two brothers, one 2 1/2 years old and the other 1 year old, were playing.

Lewis asked the 2 1/2-year-old boy if wanted to go to the store with her, and the father gave approval. After the child failed to return in the evening, the worried parents called police.

The next day, Thursday, police supplied two Kona radio stations with a description of the suspect’s car. A motorist listening to one of the stations called police on her cellular telephone and told them she was following the car on Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Because of the motorist’s phone call, police stopped the suspect on the highway and arrested her. They found the missing child unharmed in the suspect’s car.

Detective Bradley Main of the Kona CIS thanked the two radio stations and the public for their help in locating and arresting the suspect.
