MEDIA RELEASE

A 53-year-old Captain Cook man died Saturday (December 16, 2006) at the Queens Medical Center from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash two days earlier.

Responding to a 2:46 a.m. call on Thursday, December 14, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle and traveling south on Highway 11 .1 mile north of the 114-mile marker when he ran off the road and struck a stone wall.

The victim, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Kona Community Hospital by fire rescue personnel and later flown to Queens in critical condition. He died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday.

Police consider speed and alcohol to be factors in the crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 33rd traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 34 at this time last year.
