Report No. C11006478
A 45-year-old Kona man died Thursday (March 10) from injuries he sustained in a one vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11), south of the 103-mile-marker in South Kona.
The victim was identified as Clyde A. Duncan of a Kona address.
Responding to a 1:39 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that a 26-year-old woman from Honaunau was operating a 1993 Ford Explorer multi-purpose vehicle and traveling south on Mamalahoa Highway when she lost control and ran off the right of the road striking a tree.
The victim, who was a passenger in the vehicle and the driver were transported to the Kona Community Hospital by Fire Rescue personnel.
Duncan was flown to The Queens Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition where he later died at 8:50 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, negligent injury, no operators license and no no-fault insurance.
She was released pending further investigation being that she was confined to the Kona Community Hospital for her injuries.
Police believe that the victim was not wearing a seatbelt.
It is unknown at this time if speed was involved but alcohol was a factor in this crash.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have reclassified the negligent injury case to a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.
This is the 6th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 8 at the same time last year.
